Why does it look like boxes on someone else's screen?

If their device has no font for the converted letters, they show up as boxes (□). Which styles survive depends on the device and the app. Changing one or two letters instead of the whole name keeps it readable.

Frequently asked questions❓

No. It swaps your letters for different characters that happen to look styled. That is why it works in places like the Instagram name field, where you cannot change the font.
Korean letters keep their shape, because Unicode has no script or double-struck version of Hangul to swap in. Five styles still work: strikethrough, underline, slash, wavy and dotted all add a mark to the letter.
Yes. They look the same to you but count as different characters to a computer, so a styled name may not turn up in search. Hashtags and mentions work the same way.
